Background

Due to population growth, urbanization and shifting diets, demand for animal source foods is growing rapidly in the region. The CGIAR research program ‘more meat, milk and fish by and for the poor’ aims to sustainably increase the productivity of small‐scale livestock and fish systems, making meat, milk and fish more available and affordable to poor consumers across the developing world.

The growing livestock production poses increasing pressure on natural resources such as land, water and climate. Therefore the need for a “pragmatic tool” to assess environmental impacts is greater than ever. With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) our group is taking stock of existing environmental assessment methods with an aim of formulating a new comprehensive framework applicable in many different settings. The outcome should be an approach that is applicable for rapid environmental assessment of existing, and planned, livestock production.

Proof of concept will be shown by a pilot study testing the framework for smallholder dairy production in East Africa.

The stakeholder consultation on 18th September in Nairobi aims to anchor the development of the framework within the East African stakeholder community. Through exchange of ideas and input during the meeting the ongoing work will get guidance from your experience and “on the ground” insights.

The main outcome of the meeting will be threefold: (i) learning from each other (across countries and fields of expertise); (ii) safeguarding that the environmental framework is anchored within East African reality; (iii) networking for future collaboration.
